How did the business start?

Tom Stugmyer on location

Two Wadsworth residents, Joe and Susan Arpad, had lived in a number of communities as they were college professors and the institutions had a local, community-based radio station and they always loved the direct connection to what was happening locally. When they came to Wadsworth, they wanted to see a station here and started the process. They had to put an antena, which is on a water tower just outside of town and broadcasts for eight miles. Everything on the station is local from the content to the advertising.

What challenges are you facing?

Tom and a morning show guest

The radio station is all self-funded through advertising (or we call it underwriting) and grants. We generally can raise enough to cover our costs, but we want to move the atena to increase our listener range and that will cost more money.

Where are your customers and suppliers located?

All of our listeners have ties to Wadsworth. They can listen locally on an FM radio, or on our website from anywhere in the world. And people who leave Wadsworth do listen! It is also great when we do live remotes at football games, or basketball games, and family can listen as well. We hear all the time from grandparents grateful for their ability to be a part of their grandchild’s activities.

Does your company focus on any sustainability efforts?

Roger Havens doing his show

Everything we do is online or on air. We don’t produce any paper or waste so you could say it is all sustainable! Also FM signal isn’t disrupted by weather, typically, so we’re always available.

How does your business interact with government?

Tom, Joe, Roger Wright and a student

We do a lot of programs with our local and county government entities, allowing them to show a different side of what they do. It isn’t about rules and regulations for us. It is about helping people see why they are needed and the good work they do.

How does someone get a job with you?

The Wadsworth Community Radio Morning Show

We generally don’t have openings, but we have opportunities for high school students to introduce them to the radio media world. We love having students visit and see how a radio station works as well!

Why do employees like to work here?

In this job we are always learning. First you learn the technology to run things, and then learn all about the community. We have guests on who talk about programs we didn’t know about or we get to be part of things we didn’t know were possible. Everyone who works here loves to talk and we get to do that for our whole job!
