As a person gets older, sometimes they need help to manage their day-to-day activities. And sometimes they need to have a nurse or doctor very near by, just in case. In these situations they can go live at Life Care Center of Medina. About 145 people can live in this facility making friends, participating in lots of activities, and getting any special care they need. The residents are happy, the staff is happy, and the families are happy, which makes it a great place to work.

How did the business start?

Forrest Preston launched the company in 1970 in Cleveland, Tennessee. At the time he had one location and really wanted to provide his residents the feeling of home rather than a facility. He was successful and more and more people wanted to live at his locations. We now have over 250 locations in 27 states.

What challenges are you facing?

It takes a special person to work here. You have to be good at lots of different things and that includes caring about people. Our residents are really incredible people with great stories and you need to be willing to listen. We want to offer even more programs than we already do so we need those people who will help us do that. And our location is a little remote so it is more difficult to bring in staff.

Where are your customers and suppliers located?

Most of our residents have been referred by their hospital and come from all over Northeast Ohio, although they are usually from Medina County. It is good for our residents to be near friends and family.

Does your company focus on any sustainability efforts?

We recycle as much as we can and encourage our residents to participate. We also take care of our staff as we have a Giving Tree so if someone needs something, they can put it on the tree and people can get it for them. It isn’t a traditional sustainability program, but it can be gently used items or even things people have never used but are in their homes.

How does your business interact with government?

We deal with several government agencies to pay for people’s care. Medicare, which is the federal government program to help senior citizens, and Medicaid, which is the state program, are the two biggest. They have lots of rules we need to follow and then they will pay for services. We also deal with the Centers for Medicaid as Medicaid is different in each state.

How does someone get a job with you?

We post all our positions on our website and a variety of job boards, but our favorite are walkins. Most companies don’t want to do that but we find if we can show you around, let you experience what it is like to work here, and see how open and friendly we are, you will want to work here!

Why do employees like to work here?

Our management actually understands the jobs our employees do. We also really take care of our staff as much as they take care of our residents. And our residents are so much fun! At some level it is like having a whole bunch of grandparents who care about you and want to see you succeed. It is a really supportive, happy place to work.
